MISDEMEANOR CRIMES

A MISDEMEANOR is simply a crime for which a person could be imprisoned for 1 year or less.

In Oregon, there are four types of Misdemeanors:

1. Class A (1 year in jail, fines of $6,250.00)
Examples include Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants, Assault in the Fourth Degree, Reckless Driving, Theft in the Second Degree, Hunting/Wildlife Violations, etc.

2. Class B (6 months in jail, fines of $3,500.00)
Examples include Harassment, Disorderly Conduct, etc.

3. Class C (30 days in jail, fines of $2,250.00)
Examples include Theft in the Third Degree, Improper Use of 911, etc.

4. Unclassifed Misdemeanors (penalties established by statute)
Examples include Contempt of Court.

Conviction of a misdemeanor in the State of Oregon does not result in the loss of a person’s civil rights, such as the right to vote or sit on a jury or to bear arms. However, many other collateral consequences arise as a result of being convicted of certain misdemeanors, such as the prohibition of possessing firearms if convicted of a crime of domestic violence, or the loss of a drivers license for a traffic crime, or the loss of a hunting/fishing license for the conviction of a hunting/wildlife crime.
